The Reed-Stewart Agricultural Science Center, located at 1924 N. Main Street in Mansfield, is a unique hands-on training and educational facility for students interested in the field of agricultural science and agribusiness.

The facility was opened in December of 1998.  It is dedicated in honor of two of Mansfield ISD's Agricultural Science (vocational agriculture) instructors, Mr. Harley K. Reed and Mr. Leon R. Stewart, Jr.  See the history section for additional information about Mr. Reed and Mr. Stewart Mvc-045s.jpg (47132 bytes)and their careers at Mansfield High School and Ben Barber Career Tech Academy.  The Reed-Stewart Agricultural Science Center was built with funds from a local bond election.  The cost of construction and the value of the property totaled some $750,000 at opening.

Two buildings at the Agricultural Science Center cover 10,350 square feet.  Special features include three large classrooms combined with a computerized laboratory that allow students the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the science and technology of agriculture.  Also included are ten large animal stalls, eight pens for sheep and goats, a separate four stall horse barn and a small animal room for rabbits and poultry.

The facility houses a large feed/tack room, a large animal scienceMvc-052s.jpg (45455 bytes) laboratory with grooming and washing areas, a covered animal working area with large and small animal scales and handling chutes.  The ultramodern horse barn features two feed and tack rooms, swing out feed doors on stalls and an automatic heated watering system.  There is a large exercise arena/show arena and three small pastures.  Specialized additions to the RSASC are the computerized misting system and fully automatic and heated watering system in every pen.

An addition to the origianal building was opened in early 2005, when the new Ben Barber Career Tech Academy (also named in honor of a former MISD Ag teacher) was completed.  The "west wing" features one of the district's largest classrooms, a student computer/research lab, an aquaculture lab, food tech lab, a walk-in cooler for use with floriculture and food tech courses and houses the offices of the Agricultural Science Teachers.

Two seperate computer lab areas provide MansfieldMvc-042s.jpg (26438 bytes) agriscience students the opportunity to learn the very latest technology in the field of agriculture/agribusiness.  The units are fully networked in the MISD networking system and the internet is available on each unit.  In addition one lab is set up as a modular learning center.  The unique Depco AgriScience Basics lab has 14 work stations, which allow students in Introduction to World Agriculture and Applied Agricultural Science courses the opportunity to explore many different aspects of the agriculture and agribusiness industry.

The center also allows students to house their personal livestock and poultry in the pens and facilities.  Students make application and upon approval and availability of space are allowed to house SAE related projects at the facility where they are reasonable for their care and feeding on a daily basis.

The RSASC was designed with extensive input from the agricultural science teachers, members of the school and business community, administrators and consultants.  Educators and students praise the center as another success story to add to the history of the state and national award-winning Agricultural Science and Technology program at Mansfield.
